Peace and Justice At Home and Abroad

If I am elected, peace will be on the agenda of the Santa Cruz City Council.

Join me and other peace activists every Friday at Ocean and Water to advocate for peace and justice at home and abroad. In college, I stood against the Gulf War in 1991 with other activists, young and old, and today, again, I stand against a repeat of the war and inflicting further suffering on the Iraqi people. Over 500,000 children are dead due to the U.S. foreign policy on Iraq (alone).

The Santa Cruz Peace Coalition, the primary event sponsor, consists of dedicated individuals who came together in response to the US policy of military response to the September 11, 2001 events in New York, Washington DC and Pennsylvania. Volunteers with the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom are often present with signs, as are active members of the Green Party.

The Coalition and assorted volunteers considers many of the US Administration's military and foreign aid policies to be misguided and unnecessarily brutal toward sovereign citizens of other countries, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine, Colombia, the Philippines, and many parts of sub-Saharan Africa. Our conscience moves us to question these policies publicly, to profess our opposition to them and to offer alternatives which are otherwise poorly covered by the mainstream media.

 The Peace Agenda

You may ask what a City Councilmember can do about U.S. foreign policy? The answer is simple: act as a leader on the issue. Educate and galvanize the community towards action. Use the bully pulpit of public office to draw attention to important issues and events. Listed below is a comprehensive legislative agenda promoting the cause of peace. I promise to introduce at least one resolution every month until this agenda is passed. I invite suggestions on language and additional resolutions for this agenda.

My commitment to the peace community:
