… damn, I feel old now. My first web site, the Gnosis Archive, was put up in 1993… I once saw a reference that said that would make it one of the first 2,000 web sites in the world; and I’m pretty certain the number of web sites still in existence from that period is muc lower. Actually, I put up a “web site”, even before that, on my buddy’s Netcom FTP server - two pages, I’m not even sure what on, at this point… did that because the Armory (a local Unix dial in multi-user system run by members of a local Geek House collective in Santa Cruz, that used to offer free dial up accounts to all comeres) did not have a web server at that point. Those two pages started the Netcom FTP report (written by my friend to automate reporting on accesses to them), and indirectly, WebCom and the whole course of my life to this point (including BuyFrenchNow.com), because Netcom’s customer service was terrible, and they wanted nothing to do with serving web pages, despite the fact that hundreds of people were doing it, mostly themselves - thus, it became dead obvious to my buddy Chris Schefler and myself that a self-service commercial web hosting service was a money maker.
