Last days of school
Went and visited the kids at school today. Turns out that the younger one was out on a field trip, but we got to see the older one. Talked to her a for a bit as she “ate” lunch (an act which mostly seemed to involve trading or giving away the bulk of what she had in her lunch bag). I always enjoy observing the kids when I deliver lunch - they’re so animated… boy sat across the table from her, brought in one of those mini baseball bats and stuck it under the table… Lynnaea kept on attempting to wiggle it away from him with her foot, and eventually succeeded. Very amusing.
We had been planning to attend the honor roll ceremony this morning, as she’d made honor roll in both the fall and the winter, but unfortunately, she failed to make it this time around, because she turned in some kind of report two months late and got a C on it. Bummer.
Kids have had their hair chopped short again. Apparently the younger one’s hair is now barely neck length. This of course upsets their mother, who feels that their hair shouldn’t be cut until they are old enough to make their own decisions about it. I, on the other hand, am philosophical about it - the other parent will do whatever he does with them while he has them, and unless we get some kind of agreement written down in a court order, there is no point in getting upset. Besides, soon enough, they will be making their own decisions on this, regardless of what any adult thinks - that could be anything from letting it grow long, the shaving the sides of their heads and wearing a mohawk (hopefully not). I’ll be very curious to see what they decide.
We get them on Friday. Plans are to take them to see a movie or two over the weekend, out to dinner (as we normally do at least once), then to church on Sunday, and a birthday party for a friend’s son up in the north bay on Sunday afternoon. Given historical practice, this will probably also include at least one or two sleepovers, or at least quite a few hours running around here with other kids, or running around at another parent’s place.
Picked up a couple more books for them this week from the library surplus, and three cool National Geographic World magazines as well (their Grandma Jo bought them a subscription for Christmas last year).
Tommorrow is the last day of school, and of course the other parent hasn’t enrolled them in summer school (to our knowledge - in fact, he hasn’t said squat about summer plans to us), so we’ll be limited to seeing them when they’re in our custody until school starts next year… Lynnaea will be a 5th grader at that point. Just one more year at B40 Elementary until she’s at B40 Middle School. She’d just graduated from 1st grade when I met her mom! :)
