Dems. just don’t get it.
Sam Smith of the Progressive Review has a great quote in his recent CounterPunch article:
“The Greens are the only constituency in America whom the Democrats believe they can convince by insult.”
Sam Smith: Greening the Golden Triangle
… really, this says it all… my Dem. friends have no compelling arguments to make about why I should vote for or work for Democrats. They never point to the good guys in their ranks, like John Laird (my local California Legislator/Assemblyperson), and say, “this is what the Democratic Party is really about”… because they know that isn’t the truth. The Democratic Party, at it’s highest reaches, is about Joseph Lieberman and Gray Davis (the real “quota queen”, passing Democratic bills in dribs and drabs while pandering to corporate America and beating the bushes for $63 million so he can beat an amateur Republican millionaire senseless and still only with by 5%)… politicians who are just Democratic enough to not be Republicans. Well, that isn’t good enough. I like my tofu raw, and my politics straightforward and honest.
Someone else pointed out that the Democrats are much closer to the Republicans, line for line, than they are the Greens… which explains why the progressive and liberal “left” of the party is leaving it in droves… despite the continual howls of Democratic Party activists about “spoiling”, “splitting”, “betrayal” and letting Republicans win. The real “primary” is happening at the grassroots, and the Democrats are losing, more and more every day.
When Kucinich drops out, and progressives and liberals come to their senses and realize that Dean is Clinton Mark II, a centrist in populist clothing, someone who scores in my smartselect.com presidential poll as less compatible than Joseph Lieberman, the Greens are going to see a surge at the grassroots like nothing seen before in American politics. What a glorious day that will be. … and all made possible by the Democrat-lite white male candidates of the DLC and DNC and the continual failure of Democratic Party loyalists to truly get that the Greens are not just strayed Dems, but a movement with fundamentally different goals and values from the two coporate parties.
