OECD ranks China third in R&D spending

China ranks third in the world for spending on research and development, according to new figures from the Paris-based Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, which underline China’s rapid march to industrialisation.
Total R&D spending in China in 2001 came to $60bn (£35.7bn, €51bn), behind the US and Japan, which spent $282bn and $104bn respectively, but ahead of Germany, with $54bn, says the latest edition of the OECD’s science, technology and industry scoreboard, a compendium of data published every two years.
