Candidate in the California Governor Recall Peter Camejo, interviewed by Barbara J. French,

Barbara J. French: What does this recall election say about the state of politics in California?
Peter Camejo: There’s a crisis, both fiscal and politically, and the recall has made a lot of it come to the surface. There’s a major split going on in the Democratic Party and in the Republican Party, and the political system has opened up. This is the best and the worst election we’ve ever had. Best because a lot of point of views are being heard. Worst because it’s structured in such a way that the will of the electorate is not being respected because there’s no runoff. No second round, no instant runoff voting, no system to register the will of the electorate better. I believe in the right of recall. And I think the fact that somebody uses it - that you don’t agree with - should not be that you turn on that right. It is very difficult to get a recall on the ballot, contrary to what the Democrats are now saying. This law was reviewed and rewritten by the Democrats. So I think they have a lot of responsibility here on the fact that it may not be working the way we all would like it to work.
