Matt Gonzalez vs. Gavin Newsom
[Thought this was a mildly amusing article. -Thomas]
For those keeping a close eye on mayor’s race, it’s hot for more reasons than one
Jane Ganahl, Chronicle Staff Writer Friday, November 28, 2003
The 2003 San Francisco mayor’s race is making history for some very important reasons. One: The runoff candidates — Matt Gonzalez and Gavin Newsom — are both relative political neophytes. Two: Whichever one wins will be the youngest mayor ever to serve San Francisco; Newsom is 36, Gonzalez is 38.
And then there’s the fact that both are major hotties.
Whatever their positions on the issues, Newsom and Gonzalez have put sex appeal back into local politics.
“They both clearly have ‘it,’ and this election has generated a buzz based on that,” chuckles Supervisor Bevan Dufty, a Newsom supporter and City Hall wag. “Matt has this soft-spoken bohemian thing that really draws people in, and Gavin has the JFK thing going for him.”
