Appeal to the GPUS Coordinated Campaign Committee for a Virtual Safe States Campaign

The following letter has been prepared to be sent to the GPUS Coordinated Campaign Committee: I am asking that all Greens, who agree with this proposal and are willing to participate in such a national committee to please send an e-mail to gignetti1@aol.com and their name will be added to this letter.

We, the undersigned, believe that, whether or not there is agreement as to going with a “Safe States” presidential strategy on a national level there is one thing that should be perfectly clear: many Greens, who were very active in swing states would be very hesitant to participate in a campaign for the next Green Party candidate in these states again because they are afraid that a repeat of 2000 is very possible and it’s fruition could actually set back our efforts to build the Green Party substantially.

We therefore make the following proposal to the GPUS Coordinated Campaign Committee: That a Virtual Safe States Working Group be set up and/or sponsored by the GPUS Coordinated Campaign Committee. The purpose of this group would be to become a conduit for the coordination of a national effort to support the Green presidential campaign in “safe” states using research, e-mail, bulk mailings and long distance telephone banks.

This working group could prove to give our presidential campaign a big boost regardless of what our national strategy turns out to be. By focusing a national campaign on the “safe” states we, as a third party, would be capable of putting our efforts exactly where we have the best chances of success. We believe that our efforts could advance the recruitment of minorities while providing a clear and better alternative to the racism and reaction that is embraced by so many poor white people in some of the most conservative parts of the country.

The very existence of a successful Green cyber-campaign that is aimed at “safe states” in 2004 could break the barriers of distance that have historically held back the advancement of third parties in America.

We are making this appeal in the interests of accommodating the diversity of thought within our party which we so cherish. Given our concerns about the 2004 presidential campaign, failure to support this proposal could leave no role to play for the many members of the party who would otherwise participate in our next presidential campaign and result in our party entering the 2004 campaign divided and weak. We trust that you will make the right decision and support us.

Respectfully,

Gabriel Ignetti
