The crux of the issue… what makes a “liberal”?
[Note how NONE of the issues that Gavin is in favor of except rent control [which is de riguer (sp.?) anyway] has ANYTHING to do with class, economic development policies, taxation, social program funding, etc. etc. This is how our politics have been redefined, the playing field shifted… no longer is it about social justice, about how the average American is going to get ahead, about progressive taxation, about spending for schools and other government infrastructure… why? Because both the Demopublican and the Republicrat parties have been captured by the corporate interests, and are no longer interested in discussing those issues… because they agree on most of them.
What makes a “liberal”? A commitment to social justice, equality of opportunity and a decent quality of life for all? Can you be a “liberal” without having a commitment to economic justice? Can you be a “pro-business” liberal, can you be a millionaire hostage to corporate interests, and be a “liberal”? That’s what the election in SF is all about… the panic in SF is all about the realization that the Democrat’s now face a significant challenge to their pro-business status quo from the Green Party. -Thomas]

SAN FRANCISCO, California (CNN) — San Francisco voters will go to the polls Tuesday to pick a replacement for a California political legend, Mayor Willie Brown, who is being forced from the political stage by term limits.
In a city famous for its liberal politics, Democrat Gavin Newsom — who is for abortion rights, gay marriage, gun control, rent control and against the death penalty — is being challenged not from the right, but from the left, by Matt Gonzalez, a member of the Green Party, who wants to let non-citizens vote in school board elections and harness tidal energy.
