CZECH REPUBLIC: CZECH GREENS TO BECOME PART OF EUROPEAN GREEN PARTY IN
FEBRUARY
Prague — Thirty Green parties from various European countries,
including the Czech Republic, will run for the European Parliament in
June elections with a joint programme, as in February they will
officially unite at a conference in Rome.
The new European Green Party will be established in Rome on February 21,
in the presence of the chairpersons and election leaders of the Greens
from across Europe. The Czech Republic will be represented by a
five-member delegation headed by Green Party chairman Jan Beranek.
“In practice, the European Green Party will have joint bodies on the
level of Europe but will not be able to influence national programmes,”
Jakub Patocka, the leader of the Czech Greens’s campaign before the
European Parliament elections and editor-in- chief of the weekly
Literarni noviny, said.
In the Czech Republic, the unification of the European Greens finds its
reflection in the election campaign which is to be launched immediately
after the Rome conference. Posters and slogans for all Green parties
have been prepared by one and the same agency, which means that Czech
posters will be the same as those in other countries, but with slight
modifications.
“Our voters, especially young people, travel a lot. The same graphics in
various countries is to point to joint topics,”
Patocka said. The European Greens will also have joint websites and
leaflets, which will be prepared in different languages.
The joint “All-Stars Team” composed of the leaders of all parties will
support Green candidates to the European Parliament.
During the election campaign the group, which will include, for
instance, German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer and MEP and climber
Reinhold Mesner, will travel across Europe and take part in most
important election meetings.
The decision to establish the European Green Party was made at a meeting
of the European Federation of Green Parties in Berlin last May. The
regulations of the European Green Party were approved in Luxembourg in
November 2003. Fischer is expected to deliver the key speech at the
constituent conference in Rome.
The Czech Greens gained 2.36 percent of the vote in the last elections
to the Chamber of Deputies in 2002. According to the current public
opinion polls, their chances in the elections in which the historically
first 24 Czech MEP are to be elected are meagre.
