Dear Mr. Leavitt:

Thank you for your letter expressing concern about the current level of funding for our
schools. I share your disappointment in California’s dismal rankings with respect to per-
pupil funding.

I, along with other key leaders in the education community, have agreed to support the
proposed state budget due to the enormity of the fiscal crisis facing the state.
Nonetheless, I intend to continue working tirelessly to get our students what they
rightfully deserve. If you have not already done so, I would strongly encourage you to
provide your thoughts and ideas to your local legislative representatives and the
Governor.

I appreciate your interest in California’s public schools and for taking the time to write
me expressing your concerns. If you have any questions or require assistance on this or
any other state budget related matter, please contact Gerald C. Shelton, Director, Fiscal
