VoteHere releases reference implementation for auditable elections software
Tuesday, VoteHere released
(http://www.votehere.com/news/archive04/040604.htm) the full source-code of
our VHTi audit technology for electronic voting machines
(http://www.votehere.com/vhti). This reference implementation is released
for public and scientific scrutiny.
It is important to note that the effectiveness of VHTi does not rely on
securing voting software or hardware but instead on the transparent audit
process it enables. VHTi proves that voting machines aren’t cheating and
provides for a meaningful audit. It does not protect but detects when
elections are compromised — whether by hackers, corrupt insiders or
software bugs.
Yes, it is always good to build big fences, but it is critical to have a dog
that barks when intrusions occur. By providing voters the ability to verify
that their vote was counted-as-intended and third parties the ability to
verify results, VHTi is that guard dog.
The release includes a reference source-code implementation of the
cryptographic protocols, documentation, instructions on how to build the
source, and several demonstration samples. The reference implementation
package is available at http://www.votehere.com/downloads.html.
This is the next step in our efforts to be open about our technology and how
it ensures secure, verifiable voting. We began this process by filing the
underlying VHTi technology patents between 1999 and 2002. In September 2003,
detailed papers http://www.votehere.com/documents.html describing the VHTi
cryptographic protocols were publicly released. Now, VoteHere is releasing
reference source-code that implements the cryptographic protocols.
