“The Passion”
Mark Morford comments on this in his latest column. I’m not sure what to say about this… there is definitely a “not living on the same planet” thing going on here… I know a lot of decent, reasonably sane and well meaning people who appear to have been profoundly affected by this movie… just like I’m sure a lot of the same folks read Tim LaHaye’s “Left Behind” books and are completely blind to how offensive and downright twisted they appear to someone who doesn’t buy their basic premise. When I hear about how successful this movie is, I have to say that it raises the hairs on the back of my neck… I grew up conscious that my religious tradition makes me liable to persecution, but have always believed that this was a safe country for dissidence. As I grow older, I wonder about that… are we like the Jews of Germany, who steadfastly believed in the essential modernness and decency of their fellow Germans… it can’t happen here, in a modern and sophisticated society? I wonder.
My wife is Swedish. That gives me the option of migrating to Sweden, a generally sane country, once my girls turn 18 and are self-supporting. I like my country, like a lot of things about it, never seriously considered going elsewhere… but if enough disturbing stuff happens, I might begin to seriously consider it.
