Washington, DC — The 21st annual National Campaign Training
Convention, a three-day conference bringing together hundreds of
political consultants, legislative staffers and public relations
specialists from around the country and abroad, kicked off on Friday
night with a reception for 15 “National Rising Stars” as picked by
Campaigns & Elections Magazine. Among the Democrats and Republicans,
this year’s roster of stars, profiled in the current issue of the monthly
trade publication for campaign professionals, featured one person who
does not come from the mainstream consultant universe: Ross Mirkarimi.
Mirkarimi, a founding member of the California Green Party, has
worked for numerous progressive candidates and initiative campaigns over
the last 15 years. Known as a tireless fighter for the underdog,
Mirkarimi has established a reputation throughout the campaign world as
someone who can take impossible campaigns and transform them into winning
or viable contenders.
An advisor to the Matt Gonzalez for Mayor campaign in San Francisco,
Mirkarimi has also worked for the Police Reform initiative, Peter Camejo
for Governor, Campaign Finance Reform, Public Power and the Sunshine Law,
among many other campaigns. He was honored for General Excellence.
“I know talent and Ross comes to mind; he is a super volunteer
campaign manager/political consultant who only uses his skills for
something he believes in and therein lies a large part of the reason for
his success against odds that would overwhelm even the mightiest
professional political operative,” said Art Agnos, a former mayor and
assembly-member of San Francisco, and HUD Regional Director.
Mirkarimi is now working on his own campaign as a candidate for
District 5 Supervisor in San Francisco.
