Letter to GLADD re: annoying bisexual stereotype in comic strip
Re: Pearls Before Swine, July 2nd, 2004 (use archive links to get to this edition starting tomorrow)
Cathy,
I’m not outraged by the July 2nd edition of “Pearls Before Swine”, just
annoyed and mildly pissed off… yes, I get that there’s little opportunity
to provide context in a comic strip, but having the tired stereotype of the
bisexual who is so desperate the he will fuck anything that moves dragged
out to be the punchline is a bit much. Not to mention having it re-iterated
that bisexuals “choose” (underlined even) bisexuality, when no one would
ever apply that description to heterosexuals, and damn few people outside of
the lunatic Christian right would apply that to homosexuals at this point.
Perhaps GLAAD could use this as an educational opportunity to remind
everyone that, while this stereotype may strike some folks as amusing, it
has very little to do with the realities of bisexual life on a day to day
basis.
