HRC fucks over Margaret Cho
Attn: Cheryl Jacques, Executive Director
Dear Cheryl,
There is really no polite way to say how throughly bleeped I think your
organization’s decision to dump Margaret Cho from “Unity” 2004 is. Just when
I was beginning to think that HRC might have turned a new leaf, and be an
organization that bisexuals and other marginalized folks within the greater
GLBT community could consider supporting, you go and throughly dis one of
the most visible members of the bi community for the most utterly
chickenshit reasons imaginable.
Since when did the GLBTIQ community cede the right to determine who can and
cannot speak at our events to the right-wing noise machine? Margaret’s
reaction to this decision is far more measured and classy than your
organization deserves.
Your organization has nothing but my contempt at this point. Pragmatic
political realism is one thing, but the kind of spineless acquiesence to the
right wing’s demands for conformity and suppression of dissent is another.
I can assure you that HRC will not be getting my support any time soon, and
that I will actively encourage everyone I know in my extensive network to
redirect any support they have been providing to HRC to other more
progressive organizations, such as NGLTF. This is only the latest in a long
string of grievances that many folks have with your organization - I’ve been
willing to give you, as the new ED, the benefit of the doubt on the basis of
your reported track record as a legislator in Mass., but not any more.
You have some major damage control to do with the bisexual and progressive
queer community over this action. I find myself unable to visualize exactly
how such a dialogue might be initiated, but am open to hearing your thoughts
on this matter.
Regards,
Thomas Leavitt
