Death warmed over…
… is what I feel like, after the server’s root filesystem wound up corrupted as the result of a hard drive crash… IBM “Deathstar” “click of death”… bleah. Emergency system rebuild (from scratch), starting on Sunday night (after two days of trying to persuade one of Mandriva’s “early seeders” to feed me a copy of the new OS version that had just been released that weekend)… eventually convinced myself (after numerous emails) that the dangers of building out the rest of the system (after doing an initial install from two ISOs) via the development tree were minimal (since the delta between it and the “frozen” production system were minimal). Now, pretty much, back to where we were on Saturday when the damn thing crashed… just a few more pieces to put back together.
ARGH. Two and a half weeks of sysadmin hell.
Next project is to build a duplicate server.
Project after that is to install Mandriva onto my desktop (in place of Xandros, which, in this “open” edition, is just plain lame… who ever heard of a *nix distro that doesn’t install any dns lookup tools by default?!?).
