The first gathering of bisexual people of color took place on Thursday,
August 21, 2003, as part of the 2nd Annual North American Conference on
Bisexuality in San Diego, CA (http://www.bisexual.org/nacb/). The
Bisexual People of Color Organizing Institute was aimed at creating
dialogue and developing actions steps around the needs of bisexual
People of Color. This historic event took place after decades of active
participation of bisexual people of color in the people of color gay,
lesbian and transgender movement, the larger gay, lesbian and
transgender movement and the larger civil rights movement.
Over 30 participants from throughout the United States and Mexico
participated in the Bi POC Institute. They discussed issues of race,
class and sexuality and were encouraged to share challenges, triumphs
and learned lessons from their respective personal and professional
experience in being part of, working with and providing services to,
this often overlooked, often forgotten community.
